About Me
Hi, my name is Kelly. And I am the creator and owner of Sunny Perch Soaps.
I'm a woman of many hats, as they say. I'm a wife, mom, scientist, Master Naturalist, conservationist and an avid bird lover, among other things.
My love of birds has always been a part of me. I remember growing up and watching birds from grandparent's kitchen window. My grandfather loved feeding the birds and he would have flocks of turkeys at his feeder at a time (imagine all the landmines we had to maneuver around!).
My obsession with birds... yes, it's definitely an obsession, began in 2019, when I realized there was more to birdwatching than just what is at the bird feeder. (Imagine that!) My "spark" bird, the one that really started the obsession, was a Double-crested Cormorant, which really isn't a spectacular bird. I saw what I thought was a Common Loon while driving on the highway, only to later find ten minutes later (when I was able to turn around), that it was just a Cormorant. But that day stands out in my mind as the start my obsession.
As far as soap making, I am a mom to three kids, one of whom has special needs and a slight case of OCD. To make soap last, we use mainly bar soap in our bathrooms and showers. I loved purchasing artisan soaps for myself and would spoil my son with sample bars when I bought soap for myself. When the Missouri Department of Conservation offered a free soap making class in November 2024, I jumped at the chance to learn how to make soap and have been hooked since.
After making a few batches of soap, I realized how fast we were going to be overrun by soap bars. I thought, “What if I could create something that not only smells amazing but also helps protect these winged wonders?” With the help of ChatGPT and my daughter, the idea of Sunny Perch Soaps was hatched! (See what I did there? Hatching? Birds?)
So, I thought I'd blend all my interests and do something for nature. When you purchase from Sunny Perch Soaps, 10% will be donated to help local bird conservation groups. You can call it showering for a cause!
So, whether you’re a birdwatcher, a soap enthusiast, or just someone who appreciates the finer things in life (like not smelling like a gym sock), I invite you to join me on this soapy adventure. Together, we can make the world a little cleaner and a lot more colorful—one bird-inspired soap at a time. Now, who’s ready to get their suds on?
Thank you for supporting my small business and mission,
